FIFA seeking U.K. AML exemptions

By Christine Duhaime | December 1st, 2010

According to a report in today’s Guardian, FIFA is seeking an exemption for all of its officials, staff and athletes, many of whom will be politically exposed persons, from the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism legislation in force in the U.K. if the FIFA World Cup is held in that country in 2018. Specifically, FIFA wants the unrestricted import and export of foreign currency into the U.K. and unrestricted currency exchanges, all apparently without the requirement to report any of the transactions to the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
